Rain barrel

Rain barrels: inexpensive and sturdy water storage for the garden

During the hot months of the year, you can't avoid watering your garden plants regularly. Of course, you can simply use tap water for this purpose. However, this is expensive and also not a good idea in terms of the environment.

So it is a good idea to install one or more rain barrels instead and collect the water needed for watering.

Why no garden should go without a rain barrel

  • With a rain barrel, you can save money when watering your garden.

  • A rain barrel helps reduce unnecessary consumption of drinking water.

  • Rain barrels come in many sizes and shapes to fit any garden.

  • Rainwater is generally better for plants than tap water.

  • A high quality rain barrel, like the ones you'll find in our shop, mark with a long lifespan.

Rain barrel water is better for plants

Besides the fact that water is a scarce commodity and watering your garden with tap water adds a cost, there is another reason to collect rainwater.

The water that comes out of the tap in Germany is of drinking quality. However, it sometimes contains small amounts of chlorine and is also often quite hard. Both are a disadvantage for the plants in your garden, which you can easily avoid by watering with rainwater.

As we all know, it doesn't rain every day, but for that, you need to harvest enough water when the weather gives you the opportunity. By setting up enough rain barrels, lack of rainfall will not be a problem for your garden in the future.

Rain barrels of all sizes

When you want to buy a rain barrel, there are several models of different sizes to choose from. While small water barrels have a capacity of only 100 litres, particularly large rain barrels offer enough space to collect up to 1,000 litres of rainwater.

The size that's right for you depends of course mainly on the size of your garden as well as the space available for installation. Maybe a single rain barrel with a capacity of 200 or 300 liters is already enough for you. But maybe you need several rain barrels with a volume of 500 liters each to be able to collect enough water for your plants.

Square or round rain barrel?

When you want to buy new rain barrels, you cannot only choose between different sizes. In addition, you also have to decide if you want a square rain barrel or if you prefer the more round water barrels. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Ultimately, it is entirely up to you to determine what shape you want your new rain barrel to be.

If you prefer an angular rain barrel or find it easier to place where you want it, this option will work for you. In this case, narrow and square rain barrels prove to be a space-saving solution that garden owners can resort to. But if not, you can just as easily buy round rain barrels and place them as water storage in your garden.

Rain barrels in different colors

Aside from size and shape, you can also choose from different colors when buying your new rain barrels. For example, gray or charcoal rain barrels are popular. In addition, blue and green rain barrels are still among the classics found in many gardens.

Those who like it a little more unusual can also choose from a variety of unusual shapes and buy, for example, wine barrel-looking rain barrels. Depending on the style of your own garden, such a model can be a great visual highlight.

Rain barrel setup: What needs to be considered?

If you want to equip your garden with rain barrels, you obviously don't need a separate permit from the building authority or any other authority. So you can simply place your rain barrels in a suitable area of your garden after purchase.

Make sure, however, that the ground underneath the barrel is as firm and flat as possible. Unless you are placing the rain barrel on your patio, it may be a good idea to lay some flagstones on the intended location or compact the ground if necessary.

Make sure the ground under the barrel is as firm as possible.

Independent on this, it is of course a good idea to place the rain barrels close to the wall of the house so that you can fill them with rainwater directly via the downpipe of the gutter using a rainwater collector. Otherwise, you will hardly manage to collect a sufficient amount of water with your rain barrels.

Do rain barrels have to be emptied in winter?

High quality rain barrels are normally frost proof and can therefore remain in the garden even in sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless, they should always be completely emptied at the beginning of winter. Because when the water in the rain barrel freezes, it expands. This may well lead to unnecessary damage, even in the case of very robust barrels, and therefore make it necessary to buy a new barrel prematurely.
