Ground anchors: secure fixing for Garden Edging and Bed Edging

Garden Edging is an excellent tool that has become an indispensable part of garden design. Depending on the design, the additional use of ground anchors can be useful.

Because suitable ground anchors ensure that your Garden Edging fits perfectly and stays in position permanently. Their use can therefore be practically indispensable, especially in very loose soil.

If you also look for high-quality materials when purchasing your ground anchors, you can also count on them having a particularly long service life.

What is a ground anchor?

As the name suggests, a ground anchor is an anchor used to secure an object in the ground. Simply put, an earth anchor looks like a large nail that is driven into the ground.

However, these handy ground anchors come in a variety of designs, so it's not always possible to hammer them in, some must be screwed in. Both designs have their justification, whereby both the intended use and the ground conditions must be considered when making the choice.

Drive-in and screw-in ground anchors

When you buy ground anchors, one of the choices is between so-called impact anchors and screw-in ground anchors. Impact anchors are essentially simple rods, some with barbs.

At the top end, they usually have a fastener such as a hook or angle. Impact anchors are very easy to drive into the ground with a hammer. They are particularly well suited to rocky and hard ground. Once driven into the ground, such a ground anchor is usually difficult to remove, making it a secure fastening.

Screw-in ground anchors are similar to oversized screws. A twisting motion is required to drive them into the ground. The best way to install them is to use a rod as an aid. Screw-in ground anchors also provide a high degree of stability. However, they can also be removed very easily by rotating them in the opposite direction.

Garden Edge Ground Anchors

Ground anchors are perfect for Garden Edging, among other things. They provide additional stability and should always be used when the lawn edging does not find sufficient support in the ground. This is very often the case, for example, with gravel floors or when installing Garden Edging on slopes.

Aside from this, it is advisable to additionally secure Garden Edging with a profile height of more than ten centimetres with suitable ground anchors. In this way, you will ensure that your Garden Border has good stability and cannot simply slip once it is in place.

The insertion of the ground anchors does not involve any significant additional work. At the same time, there are many advantages to using the practical fixings. Provided that the Garden Border you have chosen as well as the condition of the ground requires it, you should therefore under no circumstances do without the use of suitable ground anchors.

Long lasting steel ground anchors

The acidic soil environment presents a particular challenge for materials inserted into the soil. Like the Garden Border itself, the ground anchors used to hold it in place must therefore be as rust and weather resistant as possible.

If not, it won't be long before corrosion shows up and it will only be a matter of time before you have to replace your Garden Edging, including the ground anchors. Therefore, always use ground anchors made from suitable materials, such as galvanized steel.

This way, you can be sure that your lawn and bed borders will last for a very long time, and you won't have any unnecessary extra work when landscaping your garden.

If you want to use corten steel Garden Edging, there are actually suitable ground anchors. So there is no problem in giving the entire lawn edging the desired rusty look. Since corten steel only rusts superficially, ground anchors made of this material are very stable and durable, despite their unusual appearance.

Inexpensive plastic floor anchors

In addition to particularly strong and durable ground anchors made of galvanized or Corten steel, there are also plastic ground anchors. These are generally much cheaper. Nevertheless, they are generally weather resistant and insensitive to UV rays.

However, plastic ground anchors are generally not suitable as ground anchors for Garden Edging. This is true at least if the Garden Border itself is also made of a material such as stainless steel and the fixings need to match.

However, if you want to secure a weed cover or protective tarp in the ground for the winter, plastic ground anchors are an economical solution that offer more than adequate security thanks to the barbs that are usually present.

Are ground anchors necessary for all Garden Edging?

It is not always necessary to rely on the use of ground anchors to install Garden Edging. Depending on the model you choose, for example, you may need a concrete foundation instead to securely fix your Garden Edging into the ground.

In this case, the concrete foundation performs the same function as an anchor in the ground, ensuring that the Garden Border has adequate support and will not slip, even under stress.

Other uses for ground anchors

Ground anchors are available in different designs for different uses. Not only can they be used as ground anchors for Garden Edges, but in addition, they can also be used to secure other items, such as tents in the form of so-called stakes.

Aside from this, ground anchors can be used for the following purposes, for example:

  • Fixing of children's garden playhouses

  • Festival tent fixing

  • Attachment of advertising banners

  • Additional securing of a wooden swing set

  • Fixing umbrellas

As you can see, the uses for ground anchors are numerous. In fact, they are a good choice when you want to securely fix something without resorting to expensive, or rather permanent, solutions such as concrete foundations. However, the prerequisite is, of course, that the ground is suitable for driving the ground anchors into the ground and that it is not a ground made of asphalt or similar materials.

Tips for correctly placing ground anchors

It is best to drive the anchors into the ground with a rubber hammer. If you only have a metal-headed hammer, be sure to place a piece of wood underneath to avoid damaging the ground anchors when you hammer them in.

If the ground is very hard, you can loosen it slightly with a spade before driving the hammer, if necessary. Place the anchors in the ground about one metre apart. If your Garden Border has a total length of ten metres, then you will need ten ground anchors to ensure good stability.

What to look for when buying ground anchors?

Of course, it is important that you look for good quality, weatherproof materials when purchasing your ground anchors. In addition, however, you should make sure that the ground anchors of your choice are suitable for the Garden Border in question.

Because it definitely makes a difference whether you have chosen a wide or narrow Garden Border. To ensure a smooth installation, the dimensions of the ground anchors should be different according to the dimensions of the lawn border.
