A raised bed is a bed that is elevated rather than at ground level. To this end, it is equipped with side walls. These can be made of different materials, such as wood, metal or plastic.

High beds have many advantages

There are several advantages to creating raised beds, which is why more and more garden owners are turning to this particular type of bed when designing their gardens

High beds can score points with the following benefits, among others:

  • The height makes the beds easier to maintain.
  • The soil in the raised bed warms up sooner.
  • Less weeds grow in raised beds.
  • Plants grown in raised beds grow especially fast if they are well maintained.
  • A raised bed contributes to a successful garden design.

High beds made of different materials

If you decide to create a raised bed, last but not least, you have to make a choice regarding the construction material. Indeed, a raised bed can be built from a wide variety of materials, each with its own merits, of course.

Which variant is the right one depends, among other things, on your personal ideas. So, in most cases, you can opt for an individual solution and, of course, take into account the appearance of your garden as a whole. After all, your raised beds should not look like foreign bodies, but fit in perfectly with the rest of your garden.

High raised beds can be constructed from the following materials, among others:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Stones

The popular classic: Wooden raised beds

Large wooden raised beds are undoubtedly classics and, as a result, remain very popular with many home gardeners to this day. If you want to achieve the most natural look for your garden, you are definitely on the right track with a wooden raised bed.

And that's not all.

Besides that, there is a huge variety of different sizes and shapes at your disposal. This means that you can design your wooden raised bed in a very individual way and match it perfectly to the rest of your garden.

In addition to the classic variant, which consists of a wooden frame placed on the ground, there are, for example, models with legs. In addition, you can even buy multi-level wooden raised beds, which are particularly suitable for balconies or terraces, as they can accommodate a lot of growing space on a small area.

Another visually appealing option is the wooden frame, which is placed on the ground.

Another visually appealing option for a wooden raised bed are also models made from willow branches that are woven to resemble the look of a wicker basket.

Wooden raised beds are also wicker models.

As you can see, wooden raised beds have a lot to offer. However, when purchasing, you should be aware that wood, by its very nature, will not withstand the weather forever. You should therefore expect to have to maintain your wooden raised beds regularly, respectively refurbish them, and inevitably have to replace the material at some point.

Modern and sturdy: metal raised beds

In addition to wood, metal in particular is becoming increasingly popular when it comes to building attractive and sturdy raised beds. There are raised beds made of metal, for example, aluminum or Corten steel. The advantage of this material is obvious. Compared to wood, metal is generally much more weather-resistant and easier to maintain. If the quality is good enough, metal and aluminium raised beds can withstand environmental influences for many years without any problems, so that you can enjoy them for a particularly long time.

Besides that, metal raised beds, as you can buy them for example in our shop, are usually very easy to assemble. Even inexperienced amateur gardeners have no difficulty in creating a high-quality metal raised garden bed.

Experience.

In addition, you decide with a metal raised bed for a particularly modern design, which depending on the design of the rest of the garden sometimes represent a very good choice and can either fit perfectly into the overall picture or also form a great contrast.

If you want the whole thing to look a bit more rustic, on the other hand, you will be right with a raised bed made of corten steel. Corten steel is subject to surface corrosion, which gives the material its characteristic patina. At the same time, the thin layer of rust on the surface protects the material underneath, so that corten steel can score points with a particularly long service life.

A versatile alternative: plastic raised beds

If you want a particularly cheap and quick-to-assemble solution for building your raised beds, plastic can sometimes be a good alternative.

Raised beds can be built from a single piece.

As long as you pay attention to good quality when purchasing, plastic raised beds can usually also convince with a fairly long lifespan and good weather resistance.

Similar to wood, plastic raised beds are also available in countless different shapes, sizes and colors. The appearance of the material is partly inspired by the appearance of wood. In addition, there are also floor models as well as raised beds, which are equipped with legs.

Some plastic raised beds even look like they were made of rattan, which certainly makes them look particularly attractive. However, whether you like such a model or not is of course ultimately a matter of personal taste, which we can't answer for you here.

Made to last: raised beds made of stone

When it comes to suitable materials for raised beds, stone obviously cannot be missing from the list. A stone raised bed is very strong, weather resistant and durable.

And it is a good idea to have a stone raised bed.

Although there are some differences in this regard depending on the type of stone, you can generally count on your stone raised bed to last for many years without any problems and can be replanted again and again.

Independing on this, stone raised beds are generally distinguished by a particularly qualitative and attractive appearance. A carefully walled raised bed therefore represents a choice ornament for any tastefully designed garden and would certainly also enrich your wellness oasis.

The stone raised bed can be used as a gardening space.

If you decide to go for this option, however, you should keep in mind that building a raised bed from stones usually involves a lot more work compared to the other options. After all, you need to build a stable wall from the stones and proceed as precisely as possible to ensure sufficient stability of the raised bed.

Depending on the subsoil, you may even need to pour a concrete foundation on which you can then build the raised stone bed. If this is the case, the effort associated with the construction will of course be no less and you will need to allow extra time for this.

The right size for the raised bed

While there is some flexibility in terms of materials as well as shape and size, there are still some limitations that must be respected when creating raised beds. It is true that a rectangular raised bed can be as long as you want it to be. However, in terms of width, you need to make sure that you can easily reach all the plants in the bed.

Depending on whether you can only grow your raised bed on one or both sides, a maximum width of 75 to 150 centimeters is recommended accordingly. If you chose to create a round raised bed, the diameter should not exceed 100 centimeters.

Filling a raised bed: What to look for?

For plants to grow optimally, it is of course important that you fill your raised bed with fertile soil. In fact, you have several options for doing this. Fairly shallow raised beds can simply be filled with potting soil.

Aside from that, you can also fill your raised bed with several layers of different materials. It is advisable to layer four different layers in the bed. The exact thickness of the different layers depends on the material available and the height of the raised bed as a whole.

The bottom layer should be wood waste, such as fine branches or twigs from shrubs and similar plants. Grass clippings or leaves are suitable for the second layer. Next, fill your raised bed with a layer of semi-ripe compost. Finally, finish with a thick layer of quality potting soil on which to plant the plants of your choice.

Why should filling a raised bed consist of several layers if possible?

While, as mentioned, it is not mandatory to fill your raised bed with multiple layers, there are a number of key planting benefits to this approach.

At this time, it is not necessary to fill your raised bed with multiple layers.

Firstly, the lower layers of the raised bed will rot over time. This ensures that the plants are supplied with important nutrients over a longer period of time, which of course has a positive effect on their growth.

In addition to this, heat is generated as the lower layers decompose. This means the soil in your raised bed has a relatively high temperature. This means you can start planting relatively early in the year, and the plants will generally grow significantly faster due to the heat.

When is it necessary to top up raised beds?

If you have filled your raised beds in several layers, the surface settles a tiny bit every year. This is because the materials in the lower layers gradually rot away. To counteract this, simply top up with a little potting soil in the spring.

About five or six years after the first filling, all the materials in your raised bed should have rotted and turned into humus. You can spread this out in the normal beds in your garden, then fill your raised bed with the different layers.

Do raised beds need a vole screen?

Moles can cause a lot of damage in gardens, sometimes destroying entire vegetable gardens. As a garden owner, you therefore need to protect your meticulously tended plants from them as best you can.

Depending on the type and location of the raised bed, it may be a good idea to fit the bottom with a so-called vole grid. This is a tightly woven wire mesh that prevents your plants from falling victim to the nasty rodents.

If your raised bed is a so-called table bed, the installation of a vole grate is of course not necessary because of the lack of contact with the ground. This also applies, of course, to raised beds that are placed on slabs on the terrace, for example. In this case, protection against voracious rodents is usually sufficient, even without a vole screen.

Planting raised beds: the choice is yours

High beds offer countless options not only in terms of shape and size, but also in terms of the material used for their construction. They can also be planted with a wide variety of plants. This versatility is, of course, a big part of their appeal and is certainly a key factor in why raised beds are becoming increasingly common in gardens.

If you are primarily looking to make your garden visually appealing, you can plant your raised beds with colourful flowers. Alternatively, of course, you can plant vegetables and fruit, such as tomatoes and strawberries, in your raised beds, or even create a raised herb bed.

Plant raised beds with flowers

Of course, it goes without saying that you should simply opt for flowers when planting raised beds. This way, you ensure that your garden is particularly colorful. Basically, there is virtually no limit to your choice of flowers.

So you can choose what you like.

You can therefore evolve freely according to your possibilities and plant your raised beds simply with your favorite flowers. However, make sure that there is enough space in the beds for the flowers of your choice and that the plants are suitable for the respective location. Depending on whether your raised bed is more shady or sunny, other flowers may be a good choice to plant.

However, if you follow a few simple rules, you can expect the flowers in your raised beds to become a real eye-catcher that is sure to delight not only you, but your guests in the future.

Planting raised beds with fruits and vegetables

Bedding beds are not only suitable for planting flowers. In addition, they can also be used for growing fruit or vegetables. The possibilities in this regard are surprisingly diverse. Plant your raised beds with tomatoes, peppers, radishes or lettuce, for example.

For example, strawberries are a good choice of fruit. Especially if you have children, they will enthusiastically accept the healthy, sweet snacks from your own garden.

While you won't become self-sufficient overnight this way, of course, planting raised beds with fruits and vegetables is a great way to add some variety to your plate and make particularly good use of your own garden.

Herb raised beds for the discerning home cook

Herbs are another great way to plant your raised beds. With a raised herb bed, you can bring a variety of flavors into your kitchen. For example, plant basil, parsley, oregano, rosemary or even sage.

You'll quickly discover how easy it is to plant a raised herb bed with a little practice and plant care. Especially if you only have a small raised bed and don't have your own garden either, herbs are the perfect choice to make the most of the growing space you have.

High beds: a good idea for the balcony too

A raised bed is not only suitable to be built in the garden. In addition, raised beds are also a great choice for balconies. Especially if you may not have a garden of your own, this gives you the opportunity to still plant flowers or, for example, some vegetables and make good use of the limited space you have.

In addition to the classic raised beds, multi-level solutions are also available for the balcony. This way, you have more area for planting without needing extra space.

Depending on the size of the raised bed you want to create on your balcony, however, it is important that you keep the weight in mind. This is because a larger raised bed with a corresponding amount of soil can become very heavy. Therefore, for safety reasons, you should always ensure that you do not exceed the load capacity of your balcony.

Can you build a raised bed yourself?

If you want to build a raised bed in your garden, the easiest thing to do is of course to buy a kit to suit your needs. Alternatively, however, you can certainly build your raised bed yourself if you have a bit of a craft and can devote the time.

The options available to you for your self-build raised bed brand are numerous. For example, if you decide to use stones as a building material, you can assume that you will have to build your raised bed yourself. In addition, another very popular alternative that proves to be a creative garden design solution is building a raised bed out of pallets.

Build your own durable raised beds with stones

If you want to build a raised bed with stones, soil preparation is especially important. First of all, of course, the ground must be level. You also need to prepare a proper foundation for your stone wall. This can be either a compacted layer of gravel and sand spread on top, or concrete.

The construction of the foundation involves additional work. However, it is very important to prevent your finished raised bed from sagging over time after its construction due to its heavy weight. Therefore, make sure that you take your time and do not skip this step.

Once the foundation is ready, you can build the stone wall that will serve as the wall of your homemade raised bed to the desired height. In doing so, it is imperative that you proceed with care and that your wall is straight. Otherwise, there will not be sufficient stability afterwards.

Now, line the inside of your finished wall with a suitable film. Use special bubble wrap or even a sturdy pond liner for this purpose, for example. Now you can fill your raised bed and finally start planting according to your ideas.

Build creative raised beds yourself from pallets

Old wooden pallets are just right for building an unusual looking raised bed. All you need for this are pallets, of course, as well as screws and corner fittings. In addition, you'll also need a wooden board that fits the floor of your building project, as well as sheets and wood preservatives.

Depending on how many pallets you use, you can build raised beds of quite different sizes. The pallets usually serve as the side walls and the base plate ensures that the floor stays in the raised bed. You can attach the base plate to the pallets at ground level or at a high level. If you opt for the latter, you will need less soil and you will also ensure that your pallet raised bed is not too heavy.

After firmly screwing the pallets as well as the base plate together, you should definitely treat the shell of your homemade raised bed with a wood preservative. This way, you ensure that the material becomes more weather resistant and its lifespan is extended accordingly. After all, you want to enjoy your building project for as long as possible.

Once this is done and the wood preservative has dried, you need to line the inside of your raised pallet bed with foil. Special bubble wrap works very well for this purpose. It protects the wood from moisture in the soil and thus, among other things, prevents the material from being infested with mold.

In the end, all that's left to do is to fill your self-made raised bed from pallets and plant it according to your ideas. But if you wish, you can of course provide it with additional decoration.

To ensure the greatest possible durability, it is actually recommended to place the pallet raised bed on the terrace. If you still want to place it on the ground in your garden, it is best to put slabs underneath to increase the life of the wood.
